Vickie grooming Annabell.
We are finding that our llama girls really love grooming. Each one has a preference as to which brush or comb is a favorite. And their fiber types vary, so grooming tools need to vary according to fiber type. For example, we have found that Annabell (LUA Annabell Status) and Llana (SVL Llovely Llana) are especially fond of the simple pony mane comb (plastic) with the large, wide teeth. Velvet (Norino's White Velvet), our half Argentine llama, likes a slicker brush (like you might use on your dog) and she also enjoys a regular human hair brush with hard, plastic bristles.
Betty (I Believe) doesn't seem to have a favorite but certainly enjoys being brushed. Her light wool coat is easier to get through than the medium and heavy wool llamas. Two other tools that I like for the llamas are the shedding blade (tooth side) that I have in the pony brush box and the metal curry comb (also in the pony brush box). Mark and Susan Smith showed me this trick of using the round metal curry. It works great. Use it in long, smooth strokes in the direction of the fiber. It works well for knocking off surface debris like bits of hay or leaves.
One of the best benefits of llama grooming is just the time you spend with your llamas. It's one of the best times to get to know the nuances of their sweet and inquisitive personalities. Enjoy!
